Our Vocation
SAF Military Police Command upholds and enforces military law, order and discipline in the Singapore Armed Forces during peacetime and war. The formation carries out policing and security operations, as well as ceremonial functions for both MINDEF and the State.
As guardians of military law and discipline, the Military Police and Security Troopers are dedicated to upholding the SAF's professional image and strive to inspire pride in the military. They safeguard key military installations round the clock, provide protection for vital camps and bases, and perform security operations and ceremonial tasks for national events.
Our Operations
Enforcement Operations
Enforcement operations consist of routinely conducting enforcement spot checks in SAF camps, bases, vessels and on servicemen returning from overseas deployment. Personnel are also trained to conduct Anti-Riot Operations.
Support operations include conducting traffic patrols to enforce traffic regulations for military vehicles and drivers, or launching Deserter Operations to arrest servicemen who have gone AWOL or deserted their military duties, and joint operations with Military Working Dogs.
Security Operations
Security operations across various units in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) are designed to ensure the protection of critical military and civilian installations, as well as key personnel.
Apart from protecting SAF camps and bases, other security operations include close protection for key personnel within the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the SAF; ensuring their safety in high-risk environments.
Together, these units work cohesively to maintain security across a broad range of installations and personnel within the SAF.
Ceremonial Operations
Military Policemen from the Presidential Guards platoon mount the Guard-of-Honour (GOH) contingent for military and state events. They stand guard at the Istana 24/7 and mount the Changing-of-Guards (COG) Ceremony on the first Sunday of every month. Highly skilled in silent precision drills, they have also performed at the National Day Parade as well as in international military tattoos.
Incarceration Operations
As the only custodial facility for incarcerated military offenders, the facility serves a twofold purpose: to provide a strong deterrent against unlawful behaviour as well as rehabilitating offenders and helping them re-integrate with their units upon release. Military Policemen are comprehensively trained to perform their duties effectively. Beside physical skills such as Control and Restraint (C&R) Techniques, they are also taught soft skills such as interpersonal management skills.
Investigation Operations
As the independent investigative agency for the Ministry of Defence and the Singapore Armed Forces (MINDEF/SAF), agency operations consist of investigating military offences under the SAF Act and civil offences under the Penal Code, applicable in both peacetime and wartime. The agency’s mission is to uphold truth and justice while maintaining law and order through professional and impartial investigations. Areas of forensic expertise include: Digital Forensics, Truth Assessment and Crime Scene Investigation.
Intelligence Operations
Support Military Police operations through collection, analysis and provision of criminal intelligence.
Our Attire

SAF No. 4 Uniform with MP Brassard
The green pixelated uniform is also worn, but SAF Military Police personnel are distinguished by wearing a black leather brassard on the right arm, with the letters “MP” in orange.
MP No. 3 Uniform
The Military Police (MP) holds a special distinction in the SAF as the only vocation with their very own No. 3 dress, as enshrined in the SAF Dress Regulations. This remarkable recognition underscores the sacred role of the Military Police in safeguarding discipline within our SAF units and ensuring resolute readiness for a full spectrum of operations. It symbolises the unique responsibilities and unwavering dedication of our Military Policemen.
MP has specific uniform regulations that include various accessories and insignias. They wear a white lanyard on the right arm, which is either attached to the pistol or inserted in the right chest pocket when not carrying a pistol. Additionally, MPs display their rank insignias on both sleeves, using 6 cm wide dark green patches with white embroidered chevrons. A silver name tag with black letters is worn on the right side of the shirt or blouse.
The MP cap badge is an exquisite symbol that showcases the merging of our rich military heritage with inspiration from our friends in blue, the Singapore Police Force. It is a design carefully crafted to honour our past while embracing our present. This distinctive cap badge is exclusively worn by MP vocationalists of all ranks, setting them apart from other servicemen within the SAF. The only other individuals entitled to a “personalised” cap badge are senior officers holding the esteemed rank of Brigadier General and above. This distinction further emphasises the exceptional and distinguished nature of the MP vocation.
Completing the uniform, MPs wear a white nylon belt with a silver buckle embossed with the SAF Crest.
Silent Precision Drill Squad Attire
Similar to the MP No. 3 Uniform, the Silent Precision Drill Squad (SPDS) don the crisp MP No. 3 Uniform with a white SPDS helmet, black shades, neck scarf, white gloves, drill boots, SPDS rifle.
MP No. 3 Uniform – The uniform worn by SPDS is the MP No. 3 Uniform. SPDS members also don the Silent Precision Drill skills badge as a recognition of their dedication to their specialisation.
SPDS Helmet – The SPDS Helmet is a white crash-style helmet similar to those used in ceremonial military police roles. The glossy white finish and red “MP” lettering provide high ceremonial visibility, lending a formal yet functional flair during performances and guard-mount ceremonies. As part of MP Command, the SPDS Helmet also boasts the distinct MP cap badge.
Shades – SPDS members wear black mirrored sunglasses to enhance the visual impact and protect them from glare when performing high tosses. They add a unified visual style and modern flair to performances.
Neck Scarf – SPDS members don a white neck scarf to replicate the crisp ceremonial look of the SAF Military Police. It adds contrast to the uniform and complements the visual elegance of their regimented movements.
Gloves – White gloves are worn to highlight hand motions and protect both the bands and the rifle during performances. They contribute to the clean, polished look of SPDS.
Drill Boots – SPDS members wear highly polished black drill boots, with white polyester laces and gartered trousers. These boots have been modified with the addition of steel plates along their heels, aiding members to produce a crisp and distinct ‘click’ when bringing their heels together.
SPDS Rifle – The SPDS uses Mk-4 replica rifles as part of their drill performances. Each rifle weighs 2.5kg and are sometimes fitted with a white rifle sling and a bayonet. These rifles are integral to their routines, which involve precise tosses, spins and synchronized movements.
MP Ceremonial No. 1 Uniform
The Army No. 1 Uniform is worn with the Military Police red peak cap during ceremonial occasions and other important official functions, such as in the forming of the Guard-of-Honour contingent for visiting VIPs and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Day, as well as when performing ceremonial guard duties at important state institutions such as the Istana.
Scene-of-Crime Vest
The Scene-of-Crime Vest is worn by Crime Scene Officers from the Special Investigations Branch (SIB) for practicality.
Personal Safety – the vest offers protection against physical hazard or contamination.
Identification – the vest identifies the wearer as a Crime Scene Officer, which helps to distinguish them from other individuals at the scene and ensures proper access to the crime scene.
Utility – the vest is equipped with utility pockets to ease the Crime Scene Officer in carrying essential tools such as torchlights, pens/pencils and note pads that are needed for documenting and processing the Crime Scene.
Anti-Riot Gear
The SAF Military Police Command undertakes the responsibility to quell any riots in military installations. The Law Enforcement and Ceremonial Company (LECC), with the support of the Military Working Dog Unit (MWDU) from the Military Police Enforcement Unit (MPEU), are tasked to perform the role of SAF’s Anti-Riot Force. In the event of riots in military installations where resident forces are unable to contain, the Anti-Riot Force will be activated to restore peace and order to the affected location.
Traffic Outrider Uniform
The Military Police Traffic Platoon has been donning the Temasek Green and then the official MP No. 3 Uniform since 1983. On 1 July 2015, as the SAF embarked on our 50th year celebrations, the SAF Military Police Command unveiled their new attire for the Military Police Traffic Outriders (MPTO).
This new suit boasts specially designed riding gears which are water repellent and fitted with multi-impact protectors to offer the riders more comfort and protection.
Close Protection Officer
The mission of the Special Security and Protection (SSP) platoon, as a Close Protection Detachment (CPD), is to protect and safeguard key appointment holders in MINDEF and SAF from any bodily harm and embarrassment.
All Military Police regulars must attend the Basic Close Protection Course as part of vocational requirements, where they begin to hone the basic skill sets required for Close Protection missions (i.e. small arms shooting, Krav Maga, reaction drills). Regulars who have cleared the course and are posted to CPD as operators will be put through advanced training where their basic skills and knowledge will be taken to the next level and put to test as they apply them in real world operations.
For professional development, our operators are given opportunities to attend courses both locally (e.g. Class 3I, Krav Maga Instructor Course) and abroad (e.g. United Kingdom Royal Military Police, or UK-RMP, Close Protection Course, UK Advanced Driving Course).
The attire of our Close Protection Officers are in sync with the events attended by the principals, ranging from lounge suits to even basic running attire. As they usually operate in a public setting, operational gears are in a covert setting to blend in with the environment. Try spotting our operators if you can during MINDEF/SAF events!
Military Working Dog Unit (MWDU)
Military Working Dog Unit’s handlers and trainers operates in SAF Long 4 attire, equipped with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as Cut-Resistant Personal Protective Arm-sleeves as well as Cut-Resistant Full Gloves to assist them to handle Military Working Dogs (MWD) more efficiently and effectively. Proper PPE protects our handlers and trainers from potential dog bites, to allow them to train safely to the MWDs’ full potential.
